Some insurance providers may not insure your car if it falls into any of these categories:

• If your car has more than seven seats or is a commercial vehicle: you may not be able to insure your vehicle, as commercial cars require a different level of insurance.

• If your vehicle is a van or pickup: because of the size, power and type of work these vehicles are used for, most car insurance companies will not insure vans or pickups on standard car insurance.

• If your car is used for private hire, driving instruction, selling, soliciting for orders or collecting money: these uses would all count as commercial use, and would therefore require a different level and increased details of cover.

• If you use your car in competitions or rallies: there would be increased risk to the vehicle if it was used as part of competitions or rallies. This would require a non-standard car insurance to cover you completely.

To be qualified for car insurance, you must be a permanent resident in the UK and have either a provisional UK drivers' licence or another European drivers' licence.

When you apply for car insurance, you will be asked several questions relating to how you use your car. The insurance provider may ask you what you use your car for, whether you ever use if for business for example, or if you drive in competitions. It is vital that you answer these questions truthfully so the provider can tailor insurance to meet your vehicle's needs. If you fail to give totally accurate information whilst asking for a car insurance quote, you may find that any attempt to make a claim will be invalid in the future. Each company will have different levels and details of cover, so it is essential to check this through before purchasing an insurance plan.
